The Heritage site is on 12ha on the banks of the Maribyrnong River. Started in 1878, its chambers with their double bluestone walls provided safe storage to Victoria’s mining industry and our defence in the two world wars -- the site became known as the “Arsenal of Australia”. It was  decommissioned in the 1990s and off-limits until this year when monthly small-group guided tours were permitted.
Our expert on-site guide will walk us through the  warren of buildings, tunnels, river canals for barge-loads, tramways, docks, giant earth blast walls and tall bluestone perimeter wall. The designers aimed to send any blast upwards and not sideways. Is it safe? Well, no explosions since 1878 to date.
Much of the tour is out-of-doors.. Note there’s a slope or two so basic fitness and sturdy shoes are needed. Toilets available. Queries: Tony Thomas tthomas061@gmail.com
